When a hurricane or tropical storm hits, floods and stormwater can wreak havoc on your home or business. Hurricane season is slated to start very soon and according to scientists, it will be an active season with between 6 – 9 predicted major storms. This means the potential for flood and water damage over the next few months is extraordinarily high. At NewGen Remediation, we can help you with drying and restoration after water damage but we also believe being prepared is the best way to minimize loss. In this article, we provide some tips to help you minimize water damage during storms:
Regularly clear debris from your drains and ditches and trim any excess tree branches, shrubs, or other landscaping that could become dislodged during heavy winds.
Keeping trees and shrubs free of debris that could fly during a storm helps to prevent broken windows, doors and roof damage which could lead to flooding/water damage. If you live in an area with a lot of trees, make sure to rake your yard regularly and clear your gutters, downspouts and storm drains of leaves, mulch, or other debris. You can use a leaf blower or gloves to clean the gutters and a flexible water hose with a high-pressure attachment to ensure the downspouts are clear. Do not pile these up and put these items where they can make their way into your drains, instead bag the leaves, and set them at the curb for pick up.
Improve drainage around your home.
If your home is prone to flooding when it rains heavily, it’s time to call in a contractor and have them inspect your drainage. Ideally, the ground should slope down away from the foundation of your home or business. You may need to bring in dirt and sod to improve the grading. In some cases, you may need to install drainage where water accumulates to give the water a place to go during heavy storms.
Check for and seal openings and cracks in your foundation.
Inspect your home’s foundation and siding for any cracks or chips that may allow water to enter your home. You can repair these yourself (DIY) or for the best peace of mind, call in a reliable contractor to do it for you. You should also be regularly sealing openings, such as doors, windows, utility, and exhaust penetrations.
Check & seal your basement windows.
Improve the water resistance of the basement or low windows by making sure they are properly sealed and caulked. If you have old windows, you may also consider having new ones installed. Newer windows have a better seal which can reduce the chance of water entering your home. New windows can also help with energy efficiency.
Have sandbags on standby.
When a storm hits and the water levels continue to rise, having sandbags nearby to place at your entryways can help keep flooding at bay.
